Appointment as Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi has been appointed as Associate Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine. The Magazine (RAM) publishes technical articles of interest to the international robotics and automation community. The magazine has over 12,000 readers and is consistently ranked by Thompson's Journal Citation Reports (JCR) as one of the most highly ranked publication in both Robotics (#5) and Automation & Control (#13) categories, with an impact factor of 3.276 in 2016 (5 year IF = 5.607). The magazine publishes four issues per year: March, June, September and December. The journal's website is http://www.ieee-ras.org/publications/ram

 

Conference Editorial Board:

Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi has been invited to serve as an associate editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society's conference editorial board for the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2018).  ICRA is the flagship conference in robotics and automation and continues to be one of the most prestigious in this area. ICRA 2018 will be held in Brisbane, Queensland Australia during 21-25 May, 2018.

Lab Tour to VA ASME Members:

The Robotics and Mechatronics Lab organized a Lab tour hosted on May 11 for the ASME members of the Virginia Section and other guests. The evening started with a short overview and presentation of the mission of the lab and ongoing research projects, followed by a walk-through of the Robotics and Mechatronics Lab where visitors interacted with Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his graduate students discussing the various ongoing research and education activities in the lab.

Research Grant Awarded:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi received a new research grant from the U.S. Army Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) through a contract from RE2 Inc., a Robotics company situated in Pittsburgh, PA. The team consisting of RE2 Inc. (leads the Phase II SBIR), Virginia Tech, and Lockheed Martin was tasked to develop automated robotic technologies that can assist combat medics in maneuvering, treating, and evacuating wounded soldiers under hostile conditions. Ben-Tzvi is the PI for the Virginia Tech part of the team. Under this research effort, Ben-Tzvi’s Robotics and Mechatronics Lab will research and develop a mobile mobot for integration with a LIFELINE-equipped Squad – Multipurpose Equipment Transport (S-MET) unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The mobile robot will be designed to safely retrieve, secure, and transport a casualty to the S-MET, where LIFELINE can in turn lift and secure the casualty onto the S-MET for transport to a hospital or air evacuation location.

The IEEE/ASME TRANSACTIONS ON MECHATRONICS is a peer-reviewed bimonthly periodical that began as a quarterly in 1996 as a joint publication of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division, and ASME Design Engineering Division. The aim of the present TRANSACTIONS is to establish a high-quality archival journal which presents the state of the art, recent advances and practical applications of mechatronics. On June 1, Prof. Ben-Tzvi gave an invited research presentation in Washington, DC during the Annual Executive Meeting of Maxon Precision Motors, Inc. company. The research seminar was titled "Integrating Novel Field Robots and Robotic Exoskeletons of the Future". At the meeting, Ben-Tzvi had the opportunity to network and discuss future needs of powering novel robotic technologies.

Research Grant Awarded:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi recently received a new research grant from the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. This research grant is part of Prof. Ben-Tzvi's collaboration with Dr. Nathalie Maitre, MD, PhD who is a neonatologist and developmental specialist at Nationwide Children's Hospital, to develop robotic technology for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Ben-Tzvi's proposal for "Development of Two-Finger Haptic Glove Exoskeleton for Delivery of Somatosensory Stimuli for Measurement of Cortical Responses in Neurologically Impaired Children" will look at using haptic robotic exoskeletons that can apply forces in a controlled fashion to various fingers on the hands of 12-36 month old children, provide stimuli with tactile feedback, and collect various measurements in real-time. The preliminary results of this research will enable Dr. Maitre's testing in typically developing infants and toddlers to establish preliminary values for both cortical responses and sensorimotor responses.

STEM K-12 Outreach:

On October 11, Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his doctoral student William Rone hosted a group of middle school students from Friendship Public Charter School for a visit to the GW Robotics and Mechatronics Lab. These students are participating in the FIRST Lego League Challenge, an international competition that introduces robotics to elementary and middle school students. Students learned about the fundamentals of robotic systems and were shown a variety of robots and research that students in Dr. Ben-Tzvi's lab are working on.

Research & Grants:
Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi has been awarded a three-year, $307,672 NSF research grant for his research "Active Dynamic Continuum Tails for Maneuvering and Stabilizing Legged Robots." This research will study methods of dynamic modeling, task planning algorithms, and design paradigms of biomimetic intelligent robotic tails to enable robust dynamic stabilization and agile maneuvering of legged mobile robots moving at high speeds. The research will impact applications from search and rescue, to reconnaissance, to exploring hazardous and dangerous environments in which robots must move effectively in unstructured terrains.

Honors and Awards:

Dr. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi received double honors, being named as both the Outstanding Young Researcher and Outstanding Young Teacher. Dr. Ben-Tzvi was cited for securing "several major research grants to establish a diverse research program that covers theoretical and applied research on mobile field robots, autonomous systems, mechatronics and controls."  His lab is a frequent stop for student orientations and visits by prospective students and their parents. Educational Outreach:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi sponsored and mentored the School Without Walls High School FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics team this year, with the dedicated assistance of some of his graduate students, including William Rone, Jeff Phillips, Wael Saab, Bohua Zhang, Yue Sun and Sina Aghli.  The FIRST Robotics Competition is an international robotics competition in which high school students team up to build robots to complete a different task each year.  The School Without Walls Mighty Penguins participated in the Washington, DC FIRST Regional, which took place March 28-30.  Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his students assisted the team with this year's challenge, which involved the design, integration, and programming of a robot capable of both shooting frisbees into targets of varying heights, and climbing a pyramid constructed of metal piping. 

 

Outreach Robotics Workshop:

On April 11, Prof. Ben-Tzvi hosted a robotics workshop for 28 Loudon County high school students as part of GW's Science, Technology and Engineering Day at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus. The session focused on how the design of robotic systems is dependent on the integration of its mechanical, electrical, control, and computer subsystems. The students were given the chance to create and test robots to follow a path and avoid obstacles in a maze. The workshop was designed by Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his doctoral student William Rone, and was run by Zhou Ma with assistance from Jeffrey Philips, Sina Aghli and Wael Saab, all doctoral students of Prof. Ben-Tzvi. GW Today has published an article on the session and the event.

Outreach Robotics Workshop:

As part of the Robotics and Mechatronics Lab's ongoing educationsl outreach activities, sixth-graders from Oak Hill Elementary School's FIRST Lego League team visited the lab to learn more about how robots can solve real-world problems. These students are currently working on a challenge titled 'Senior Solutions' that explores ways in which robots may be used to assist senior citizens in day-to-day tasks. During the visit, students learned about teleoperated systems vs. autonomous systems, the different disciplines that make up robotics, and how engineers break up complex problems into simpler tasks and work together to solve them. In addition, students had the opportunity to see a variety of robot systems being developed in the lab, including our field mobile robots, hexapod legged robots, and our continuum robotic arm. Research Grants:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi has been awarded a 2.5-year, $244,030 grant from the U.S. Naval Academy to support a research project titled "A Mechatronics Measurement System and Data Processing for Ship Air Wake Studies with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles." He is conducting the project with Prof. Murray Snyder's (MAE) on-going ship air wake studies at the United States Naval Academy (USNA).  The studies use a USNA training vessel (YP676) that has been modified to include a flight deck and hangar-like structure similar to that of a modern warship. The research includes: 1) the indirect measurement of off-ship turbulence fields using remotely piloted rotorcraft instrumented with a global positioning system (GPS) and inertial measurement unit  (IMU); and 2) the development and integration of a mechatronics system to monitor and record pilot inputs to the rotorcraft and to discriminate between pilot and turbulence induced helicopter flight disturbances.

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited to serve as an Associate Editor (AE) for the Conference Editorial Board (CEB) of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society for the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2013). ICRA is the flagship conference in robotics and automation and continues to be the most prestigious in this area.

Honors and Awards:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi's doctoral student, Mr. Paul Moubarak, won second place in the ASME Graduate Student Mechanism & Robot Design Competition of the 2012 edition of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conference (IDETC-2012) held in Chicago, Illinois. His project titled "A Tri-state Rigid Reversible and Non-Back-Drivable Docking Mechanism for Modular Robotics Applications" ranked second out of five finalists selected worldwide from many entries. Cash prizes (between $200-400) were given only for the 1st and 2nd place. Paul also presented his work during the poster session that preceded this competition.

 

Student Achievements:

Paul Moubarak and Zhou Ma, doctoral students of Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi, received student travel awards from the National Science Foundation to attend the "36th Mechanisms & Robotics Conference," as part of the 2012 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC/CIE 2012), which took place in Chicago, IL, Aug. 12-15, 2012.  The award covers their travel and accommodation costs and conference registration fees.

K-12 Teaching Outreach Activities:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi sponsored and mentored the School Without Walls High School FIRST Robotics team this year, with the dedicated assistance of his graduate students William Rone, Zhou Ma, and Paul Moubarak. This year, the school placed first among DC Public Schools teams and 14th overall out of 63 teams at the Washington, DC FIRST Regional, which took place on March 29-31. Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his students assisted the team with this year's challenge, which involved the design, integrations, and programming of a robot capable of picking up basketballs, shooting them into baskets of varying heights, and balancing on an unstable bridge. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is an international robotics competition in which high school students team up to build robots to complete a task that changes each year.

 

Invited Research Seminar:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi gave an invited research seminar at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) on March 5.  The seminar covered his ongoing research, "Symbiosis of Mobile Robotic Locomotion and Manipulation - Towards Modular and Reconfigurable Mobile Robotics on Rough Terrain."

 

RML Students Win 3rd Prize in SEAS R&D Showcase:

Congratulations to RML students Paul Moubarak, Zhou Ma and Eric Alvarez, for winning third prize, worth $3,000, at the SEAS R&D Showcase for the research "STORM: Self-configurable and Transformable Omni-directional Robotic Modules." Mr. Moubarak and Mr. Ma are Ph.D. students of Prof. Ben-Tzvi, and Mr. Alvarez is a junior mechanical engineering student working as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in RML.

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve as panel chair for the 2012 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships, which will meet in February 2012.  The DoD plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2012 to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.  NDSEG Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest.

 

Review Panel:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited by NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve as a panelist for the 2012 NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program (NASA ASP) Evaluation Panel at their February 2012 meeting. Review Panels:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve on the panel for the 2012 Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarships. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the DoD to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.

 

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve on its mechanical engineering panel for the 2012 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). The purpose of the NSF GRFP is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce in the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in fields within NSF's mission.

Prof. Ben-Tzvi and his doctoral student William Rone were awarded the Best Paper Award for their paper “MEMS-Based Microdroplet Generation with Integrated Sensing,” which was published and presented at the 2011 COMSOL Conference held in Boston, MA, October 13-15.  Their paper was selected from among 160 accepted peer-reviewed papers presented at the conference, including papers from Stanford, Harvard, MIT, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue, University of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia Tech and more.

 

 

Research Grants:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi has received a 15-month, $100,000 grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) to support a research project entitled "Autonomous Symbiosis of Robotic Locomotion and Manipulation."  The project will investigate development and implementation of algorithms for autonomous function of mobile robots over irregular terrains, such as automating the process of climbing/descending stairs, obstacles, and manipulating objects simultaneously.  The automation of these capabilities, and others, will alleviate the burden of the remote operator (e.g., soldier, policeman, rescue team) whose role can eventually be reduced to supervision and monitoring, rather than full command.

Student News:

Students from Prof. Ben-Tzvi's Spring 2011 graduate robotics course presented their class project at the Student Mechanism & Robot Design Competition, which was part of the ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conference & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC/CIE 2011), held August 28-31, in Washington, DC.  Their project, titled RAIL: Robotic Arm for Interactive Learning, was one of 13 finalists selected from among 40 entrants and was awarded 3rd Place in the Robot-Graduate category. Students in the class included: Kenan Cole, Chad Gilman, Hasan Goktas, Samudra Haque, Zhou Ma, Paul Moubarak, Jacalyn Ouellette, William Rone, Sharath Sharathi, Jon Torrey and Edwin Zambrana.

Finalist for the ASME Student Mechanism & Robot Design Competition

As part of MAE 6245, the graduate robotics course he taught in Spring 2011, Prof. Ben-Tzvi developed a project titled "RAIL: Robotic Arm for Interactive Learning," which has been selected as a finalist in the graduate robot design category of the 2011 ASME Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition.  As a result, GW has been invited to present the project at the final competition at the ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC) and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (CIE), which will take place August 28-31 in Washington, DC.  Prof. Ben-Tzvi divided the class into multidisciplinary design teams and assigned them the task of designing, building, and testing a robotic arm capable of autonomously drawing letters, numbers, and other shapes on a classroom board (chalk or white) using a computer interface. This system could be used in classroom settings as an interactive teaching aid for teachers and also to promote K-12 students' interest in the study of robotics and engineering in general.

Outreach Robotics Workshop:

On April 8, Prof. Ben-Tzvi hosted a robotics workshop for 32 Loudon County high school students as part of GW's Science, Technology and Engineering Day at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus.  The session focused on how the design of robotic systems is dependent on the integration of its mechanical, electrical, control, and computer subsystems.  The students were given the chance to work on creating their own robots, and several  teams later tested their robots, successfully following lines and avoiding obstacles within a maze.  Prof. Ben-Tzvi was assisted in running the session by four of his doctoral students: William Rone, Zhou Ma, Omar Gilani, and Paul Moubarak.  Media coverage of the session and the event included PBS News Hour Extra, the Loudon Times Mirror, and Leesburg Today.  Photos taken at the event are also available here.

Dr. Ben-Tzvi has been appointed an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems (IJCAS). The appointment is for 2 years. The journal is a bimonthly periodical published by the Institute of Control, Robotics, and Systems together with the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers. The purpose of this journal is to establish a high quality archival periodical covering state of the art, recent advances and practical applications in the fields of robotics, controls, automation, and systems engineering. IJCAS is indexed as a Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) journal and the acceptance rate is approximately 30%.The journal's website is www.ijcas.com.

 

Review Panels:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was invited by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve on the panel for the 2011 Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarships, which will meet January 21-23.  The SMART Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the DoD to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.

 

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was also invited by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to serve on the panel for the 2011 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships, which will meet in February 2011.  The DoD plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2011 to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.  NDSEG Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest.

Prof. Choi received his Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 1995. He is a Professor in Pusan National University, Korea. Lab Visit to RML:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi hosted in RML a group of 20 students visiting from the Summer Institute of Robotics (SIR) program at Morgan State University. The students were provided with a series of lectures on research in robotics and multiple robotics demonstrations. The SIR is a 4-week residential summer program designed to allow high school students to discover the science and technology of robot design and operation. The SIR mission is to increase the knowledge and understanding of robotics concepts and principles for urban high school students with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Congratulations to Will Rone, a senior MAE undergraduate student, who is the winner of a SMART Scholarship. The U.S. Department of Defense established the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program to support undergraduate and graduate students with outstanding academic achievements pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  Mr. Rone is currently involved in research activities performed under the guidance of Prof. Ben-Tzvi in the Robotics and Mechatronics Lab (RML).  In Fall 2010, Will will start his Ph.D. program in RML under the supervision of Prof. Ben-Tzvi.  The SMART Scholarship will cover his tuition and stipend for the duration of his Ph.D. program.

Will Rone is an undergraduate student working with Dr. Ben-Tzvi in RML on a research project that involves the development of precision mechatronic devices for microdroplets generation. This project is partly funded by the GWU UFF/Dilthey award.

This is an excellent achievement for Mr. Rone to publish a journal paper as an undergraduate student.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) have invited Prof. Ben-Tzvi to serve on its mechanical engineering panel for the 2010 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP).

Welcome to new Postdoctoral Scientist Dr. Samer Charifa in RML:

Dr. Samer Charifa received his Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina A & T State University in 2009. He holds B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. His current research interests include Control Systems, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Image Processing.

Welcome to new Support Engineer Kirk Sutherland in RML:

Kirk Sutherland received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University, Canada. He will be working on robotics and embedded systems.

Prof. Ben-Tzvi presented a proceedings paper, "Experimental Validation of a Hybrid Mobile Robot Mechanism with Interchangeable Locomotion and Manipulation," at the 2009 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS2009), in St. Louis, MO, October 11th -15th.

 

RML's RTC Membership:

The Board of Directors of the Robotic Technology Consortium (RTC) recently approved the GW Robotics and Mechatronics Lab's application to join the RTC. The RTC was created to support top-tier research within the robotic technology community to speed the deployment of technology from the lab to operational deployment. To meet this goal, the RTC relies on its members: traditional and non-traditional government contractors, small and large businesses, for-profit and not-for-profit entities, and academic organizations.  As a member, the GW Robotics and Mechatronics Lab will perform R&D and provide input on strategies for government agencies executing ground robotics programs. 

 

Welcome to new Visiting Scholar Dr. Getachew K. Befekadu in RML:

Dr. Befekadu received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, in 2006 with emphasis in Applied Mathematics and Control System Engineering. His research includes decentralized control and optimization of interconnected systems with applications to problems in robotics and multiple vehicle coordination.

Graduate Student News:

Paul Moubarak and Xin Xu, doctoral students of Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi, received student travel awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to attend the "Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems Workshop (PerMIS 2009)," which will take place in Gaithersburg, MD, September 21st - 23rd.  Each of them received a $300 award, which covers their travel costs and conference registration fees.

Research Grants:
Prof. Ben-Tzvi has received a $300,000 research grant from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to support a research project entitled "Study on Autonomous Coupling of Navigation and Locomotion for a Hybrid Mechanism Mobile Robot." The project aims at developing a sensor-controlled autonomous decision engine for coupling navigation, locomotion and manipulation in rough terrain conditions. Feasibility studies will be performed for a variety of applications, such as search and rescue missions, reconnaissance, surveillance, neutralization, planetary exploration, hazardous site exploration, and high-risk missions for police operations.
